Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu

La Malbaie, Charlevoix, Quebec · on a cliff above the St. Lawrence

Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu is a castle in all but name: a green-roofed chateau perched on a headland in Charlevoix, two and a half hours downriver from Quebec City, with the elegant Casino de Charlevoix connected by a covered walkway so the weather never touches you.

The casino

The Casino de Charlevoix is refinement over noise — a tasteful, softly lit Loto-Quebec room of table games, electronic gaming and slots, joined to the hotel by an interior passage. You come for a civilised hour at the tables, not the roar of a mega-floor.

It is immaculately kept and perfectly in character with the chateau it serves. Stakes are sensible, the dealers unhurried, and on a winter evening with the river black beyond the glass it is about as handsome a place to play as Canada offers.

The rooms

This is the reason to come. The chateau rooms are classic Fairmont — deep beds, heavy drapes, proper bathrooms — and the ones facing the St. Lawrence turn the whole stay into an event; book a river view or you'll wish you had.

Service still runs on the old grand-hotel model: doormen, a real concierge, the sense that someone is quietly looking after you. It feels like a resort of another era, in the best way.

Dining & the extras

Beyond the floor there is genuinely a weekend here: several restaurants topped by a fine-dining room, a spa, indoor and cliff-edge pools, and a 27-hole golf course laid along the headland. The Charlevoix food trail runs right past the door.

Charlevoix itself — the villages, the whale-watching, the light on the river — is the real luxury. The casino is the excuse; the region is the trip.

Location & value

It is remote, and that is the point: this is a destination you plan around, not a stopover. Prices sit at the top of our guide, but for an anniversary or a milestone the chateau earns it.

Pair the stay with golf, the spa or the food trail and the room rate stops feeling like a splurge and starts feeling like the whole holiday.

Good to Know
  • Book a river-view room — the outlook is the entire point of coming.
  • The casino is a covered walk from the lobby, so weather is never an obstacle.
  • Come for two nights and add golf, the spa or the Charlevoix food trail.
  • Strictly 21+ — photo ID checked at the casino entrance.
  • This is an independent review, not a booking service; confirm rates and details with the hotel.
The Verdict

For scenery, grandeur and old-world service, nothing else with a casino comes close — go for the chateau, and treat the tables as a bonus.
